318 - 1937 Jaguar 2.5 Litre Sports Saloon
Estimate: Refer Department
Registration Number: 599 XUC
Chassis Number: 11963
This stunning example of the first of the iconic pre-war SS Jaguar sports saloons was originally delivered new to Australia and was rediscovered in 1968 in time to restore it. The car was fully stripped and the restoration project continued into the mid 1990s by the owner's son, who commissioned SS specialists the Nante Brothers to rebuild the car, and it was completed in 1998 to a very high standard.
Purchased by the current owner in 2007 and imported to the UK, this car has been displayed at various events including the Techno Classica Show in Essen and has won several competitions and trophies. This elegant 2.5 litre SS Jaguar is finished in Ivory with a sumptuous green hide interior, and is supplied with V5 document, MoT certificate and Heritage certificate with bills and receipts also supplied in the accompanying history file.
Overlooked in the last few years however the market, the model is starting to wake up and prices of these rare, coachbuilt sporting saloons are increasing rapidly. Arguably one of the finest in existence due to its superb condition, this should be the first on the 'to buy list' for any Jaguar enthusiast.

SS Jaguar 2 ½ litre, 1937 model, 4 door Saloon, Chassis no. 11963 was despatched from the Swallow Road factory on the 30th October 1936 and shipped to Melbourne Australia. It was sold to a Miss A.M.Walsh. She had previously owned a SS1 Airline. The Saloon was finished in suede green duco. Records indicate that from 1946 the car had changed hands a number of times, eventually being sold to a Mr. David Gillespie in 1968 for approximately 150 pounds. Intending to restore the car, he had it temporarily stored in the barn at his Aunt's property near Romsey. It was found in a barn 1976 and discovered to have been last registered in 1968. Mr Carter, senior, purchased the SS car for $500. Although complete the SS was in need of a total restoration. Alby Olver, who had owned an identical model during the 1940's took the car to his son's garage and it was here that the SS remained for a few years and he stripped it to a rolling chassis and body frame. The various components were farmed out to be overhauled or rebuilt while the major chassis rail and rear body timbers were replaced by a cabinet maker. Mr Carter, junior (the last owner) had been assigned a task to retrieve the fully rebuilt motor and gearbox from L & N Jaguar motor repairers. This was when I first met Geoff Lugton and Doug Nantes who had done a fantastic job rebuilding the engine and gear box and who expressed a great deal of interest in the SS. Doug mentioned that he and his brother Ed owned an identical saloon in an unrestored state. Ed Nantes (well-known all over the world for his involvement and expertise with SS Jaguars) had provided Mr Carter, snr, with a comprehensive list of new parts available locally and from England. The restoration process soon took a backward step, when Mr Carter, senior, fell into poor health and died. The project then became the son's undertaking. During the next few years, slow but steady progress was made. He had braced and lifted the body from the chassis, then stripped, sandblasted, rebuilt and painted the chassis. However, it wasn't till the mid 1990s that work was recommenced on the restoration of the Saloon. When the car was complete and finally registered, it was 1998. Doug Nantes finished the restoration and had done a truly magnificent job. Once again she appeared resplendent, this time in ivory duco and a rich green leather interior. Her first outing involved nearly 1,000 miles of driving. We participated in the 1998 Bay to Birdwood rally in Adelaide, South Australia. Since then we have regularly attended the annual "Push Rod" rally and occasional Jaguar Club events. The SS was then purchased by the present owner and imported back to Britain in July 2007. Because of the high standard of the restoration little has had to be done since - some minor repainting, replacement of exhaust manifold, a carburettor replaced and a new head gasket. The car has won trophies at SS Concours events (coming second only to a Pebble Beach winner) and been much admired. It is taxed and MOT'd and been fully serviced.

This beautifully restored SS 2½-Litre saloon would undoubtedly have turned a lot of heads when it landed, brand new, in Queensland Australia in 1937.
In 1968, it was purchased by a Mr. Carter who felt that a restoration was on the cards, but it was only when his son inherited it in the 1990s, that he definitely decided it was worthy of a top restoration and he commissioned the Nantes Brothers, renowned in Australia for top quality SS Jaguar restorations. Besides an excellent restoration, a few improvements were made which included fitting a post-war 3½ litre crankshaft which was a period modification at the time offering more power and better reliability. This was an Australian domestic market upgrade because of the high mileages covered there by owners.
The car was repatriated to England in 2004 and has been enjoyed on the showground, in concours competition, collecting trophies en route, featuring in various magazines and generally being admired. Classically presented in Old English White with Apple Green leather and gleaming hardwood, the exceptional quality of the Nantes Brothers restoration still is a sight to behold and would give any new owner a great sense of pride at any Jaguar event or tour.

Seller's description:
Davenport Cars, UK
1937 SS 2.5Litre Coachbuilt Saloon
Quite a rare car to be offered for sale. Has spent most of its life in Australia, was exported to Queensland in 1937.
In 1968 the car was bought by a Mr Carter who decided restoration was required. A lot of stripping down was done but then left, his son inherited it and continued the work but decided the car needed a professional job done. In the 1990’s he commissioned the Nantes brothers known for their top quality SS Jaguar restorations. A total restoration was carried out with a number of quality improvements made making the car better than when new. One of the improvements made was to fit a post-war 3.5 litre crankshaft giving more power and reliability, this is in Australia regarded as a must do improvement because of the high mileage covered over there.
Repatriated back to England in 2004 it has been used to do a few weddings and many shows taking home lots of trophies, also being featured in various magazines. An original metal spare wheel cover has recently been purchased that will be the final touch for this lovely useable car.
A vehicle that can be used and enjoyed for personal use or any of the organised Jaguar tours throughout the year.
