The Interior

Beautifully restored interior

Sunburst detailing on door cards

Beautiful upholstery and veneers

The interior of this SS is a masterpiece in the very best of Art Deco design. As soon as you open the sizeable, rear-hinged doors you are presented with an impressive sunburst pattern in the door cards. The leather continues onto the seats, which show very little sign of use, and the veneers match those used on the windscreen surround and the dashboard.

The driver is presented with a beautifully crafted wooden steering wheel, with a matching wooden centre boss. An indicator stalk has been added to the steering column for convenience and the dashboard is well stocked with a full complement of analogue gauges and pull switches.

Leather-trimmed carpets line the footwells and appear to be expertly fitted. And on the bulkhead is an upgraded wiring loom, featuring plenty of fuses and relays for added safety.

With the hood raised, the cabin is a snug and weatherproof place to be. The headlining appears to be in good condition, and to the rear there is a spacious, fully lined boot.

The Exterior

Suave drophead styling

Long, sweeping wings

Very clean and tidy underneath

With its long, low profile, this car is everything a louche driver from the 1930s could desire. The long bonnet, flamboyantly swept wings and huge headlamps all add up to make this an exceedingly desirable motorcar.

The bodywork appears to be in generally good condition, with little sign of damage or deterioration throughout. But there are some imperfections in the paintwork, with scratches, chips and cracks to be found. The chrome plating is highly polished, with an impressive radiator surround and mesh headlamp protectors, although there is a little damage to the chrome on the hood irons.

The drophead roof provides for the best of both open-air motoring, and weather protection. It is smartly presented, with no obvious rips or stains. Similarly, the underside of the car is in excellent order. There appears to be very little sign of corrosion or damage that we could see, testament to the car’s time spent in southern Europe. It runs on a set of wire wheels, with a few chips in their paintwork and a matching set of Firestone tyres.

The Mechanics

Six-cylinder, overhead valve engine

Twin S.U. carburettors

Engine bay clean and tidy

In-keeping with their reputation for high performance production cars, these early Jaguars are no different. This SS One is fitted with a powerful six-cylinder engine, which gives it an excellent turn of speed, especially compared with its contemporaries. Lifting the side-hinged bonnet reveals a tidy engine bay, with the twin S.U. carburettors sitting proudly next to the engine.

Underneath, the car runs on a chassis provided by the Standard Motor Company, which features semi-elliptic suspension front and rear, with beam axles and drum brakes.

Spam prevention question (must be answered):
The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
