This 1934 SS1 Saloon is a restored example from the line of sports cars built by S.S. Cars Limited, which would change its name to Jaguar Cars Limited in 1945. This 2-doored, 4-seater is powered by a side-valve straight-six paired with a 4-speed manual gearbox. The engine appears to be the 2.1-liter variant that was offered as one of two choices for the 1934 SS1, and though it is a correct type originality is unknown. The car reportedly spent its life in the UK before being brought to the US about nine months ago, and it was driven in the Flying Scotsman Rally three years ago by a previous owner. This right-hand drive saloon is finished in cream paint over a red leather interior and was acquired by the selling dealer one year ago. The head gasket was reportedly replaced two years ago, and recent service is said to have included changing the fluids and installing a new battery. The car is now located in California and is offered with a clean Missouri title.

According to the seller, the car underwent a restoration at some point in the UK but details are not known. It is finished in cream paint with a black leather-grain roof and trunk consistent with the original coachwork style. The seller states imperfections include a scratch on the windshield, which can be seen in the photo gallery below, as well as chips on the edges of the roll-up windows.

The chassis for the SS1, which preceded the 1935 introduction of the Jaguar model name, was supplied by the Standard Motor Company. This example features an underslung suspension design that was added for 1933 and later models.

Coachwork by Swallow Sidecar Company is a saloon configuration that was added to the SS lineup in 1934 and started at £340. The wire wheels with knock-off hubs are finished in red with a matching rear-mounted spare. The sliding roof can be seen in both the open and sealed positions in the gallery below.

The seller states the interior has been restored, with the possible exception of the rear seats, which exhibit wear. The cabin is trimmed in red leather upholstery with wood accents and is consistent with factory styling other than the addition of seat belts to the front seats. Note the unique door upholstery pattern and hexagonal gauge surrounds.

The odometer reads 799 miles, but the seller states that is not to be accurate. Approximately 200 miles have been added since the seller's acquisition.

Stampings on the block and head suggest the engine is a model-year-correct Standard-supplied 16 hp 2.1-liter side-valve straight-six, but it is not known if it is original to the car or if any modifications have been made. The two engine options for 1934 SS1s were marketed as the 16 hp and 20 hp models in reference to the Royal Automobile Club's taxable horsepower figures, but the actual horsepower figure for the 16 hp was said to be 53 when new.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a 4-speed manual gearbox, though it is not known if it is the original synchromesh unit. A new head gasket was reportedly installed two years ago at JD Classics in the UK, and the seller states recent service included fluid changes and a new battery.

The rakish SS1 Coupe here is understood to have spent much of its life in the UK, where in latter years it had been treated to cosmetic refurbishment. Its paintwork has been refinished in cream, and contrasts with a rich red leather interior with the correct Lyons styling cues of 'starburst' door panels, divided rear seats and simple elegant instrumentation. The upholstery appears to be a blend of some new, with possibly original rear.

Some time after the work was completed in passed into previous ownership and was used by that collector on the Flying Scotsman Rally, one of the renowned series of events established by the late Philip Young under his Endurance Rally Association banner. Billed as 'adventures', the 'Scotsman' pitches a tour around the country in oft times bleak April weather, making for a true challenge.

In more recent times the car arrived in the US, where it is imagined that it must be something of a considerable rarity. Unshown as yet, it would certainly make an interesting statement at any Jaguar Cars North America event, or indeed concours, where its avant garde and detailed styling would surely garner attention.

1934 Jaguar SSI Fixed Head Coupe, This SS1 Coupe has spent most of its life in the UK. There is existing paperwork that goes back to the late 1940's. It has a fresh red leather interior with new carpets, with the exception of the rear seats which are believed to be original. The car had undergone a previous restoration and participated in the Flying Scotsman successfully. The car runs and drives quite well, brakes straight, and cools and charges appropriately.
