In production for less than a year, just 23 or 24 SS90s are reputed to have been made of which 17 are thought to survive. Exceptionally rare and historic cars, the high percentage of DNA they share with the immortal SS100 makes them among the most desirable of all SS models.

Finished in burgundy with black upholstery, this particular example has been much modified. Somewhat reminiscent of a Frazer-Nash Le Mans replica, its purposeful yet stylish bob-tailed bodywork promises a useful weight-saving over a standard car. While under the bonnet, the anaemic factory-fitted 2.6 litre sidevalve engine has given way to a far more potent 3.5 litre overhead valve unit sporting twin SU carburettors.

Riding on painted wire wheels and sporting a nearside mounted spare wheel, it boasts an inviting two-seater cockpit complete with blade-sprung steering wheel, black-faced instruments and a bespoke tonneau cover. Benefiting from four-speed manual transmission, this SS90-based Special should theoretically comfortably outperform a 3.5 litre SS100! Said to have been "totally restored for the current owner in 1993 / 1994 and used sparingly since", it comes with MOT certificate valid until March 2006 and historic class (free) road tax until May 2006.

The fact that few would dare alter an original SS90 to this extent nowadays makes CSU 703 all the more delicious. Like the proverbial Rolls-Royce breakdown lorry or Chevy V8-powered Ferrari sports racer, sometimes non-originality deserves to be celebrated. Quite possibly one of the most exciting pre-war Specials we have had the pleasure to offer, this SS is well worth a look.

From the Brazilian Collector Mr. Abraham Kogan

Specifications:
130bhp, 3,485cc inline six-cylinder engine with twin SU carburettors, four-speed manual transmission, beam axle and semi-elliptical leaf spring front suspension, live axle and semi-elliptical leaf spring rear suspension, and four-wheel drum brakes. Wheelbase: 119in. (3,023mm).

The car offered here was originally delivered by Henlys of London in May 1935 as a 2.5-litre SS1 Airline saloon. At some point in the car's life, the saloon body was removed and replaced with sporting two-seater coachwork, various chassis and suspension modifications were made, and a 3.5-litre SS100 engine was fitted. Little is known of the car's early history in this form, but it was used on the Continent in competition of various kinds. Purchased by Abba Kogan in 1991, this car was restored, at a cost of more than US$100,000, by Auto Restorations in New Zealand during 1993 and 1994, and was subsequently raced there by its owner.

The metallic dark red coachwork is in good overall condition and is fitted with impressive P100 headlamps with stoneguards, together with twin horns. In period style, the spare wheel is mounted on the offside and the screen can be folded flat. Inside, the period bucket seats are trimmed in black leather to match the black carpets, dashboard, and tonneau cover. The dashboard is fitted with a set of correct, but new, SS100 instruments whilst the steering wheel looks original. As concessions to modernity, safety, and comfort, the car has been fitted with telescopic shock absorbers, an alternator, an electric cooling fan and a discreetly-mounted power steering unit.

With its sporting looks and powerful engine, this car will provide all the attraction and enjoyment of an SS100 at a fraction of the cost. It has proved its capabilities on the track, but seems ideal for historic events - particularly in light of its thoughtful and well-integrated modern updates.
