The car offered is an original 1937 3½ Litre SS 100. It was despatched to Henleys in London on 15th January 1938. Its chassis number was 39024, its engine number M 505E and its body number 4914. It was duly registered by them CAB 135. The car retains all these numbers although a spare engine has been fitted and the original engine comes with the car in fully rebuilt condition.
Little is known of the cars early history and it first appears in the USA in 1963, probably exported in the late 1950's or early 1960's. The car was brought back to the UK in 1986 by Coys of Kensington and sold to Mr. P.D. Young of the Channel Islands. He commissioned a complete restoration of the car by Fiennes of Clanfield which was only completed in June 1989. The car was kept by Mr. Young until 1994 when the car was bought by the known enthusiast Rick Weiland of Bielefeld in Germany. In keeping with these cars successful sporting heritage Weiland campaigned the car extensively and entered many international events including four Mille Miglia retrospectives and four Rallye Monte-Carlo Historiques.
Today the car appears to be in excellent condition with good mechanicals and lightly patinated burgundy paintwork. The cockpit is trimmed in black leather and is also in good condition with appropriate patina. The bright work is in great condition and the silver painted wheels appear to have been recently fitted with a set of 550 x 18 Michelin tyres.
The car is offered with UK registration papers, MOT and supporting history file that includes originals of German registration papers and a FIVA passport. Importantly the original engine accompanies the car to retain its integrity.
